Highlanders forward Lynoth “Sonjy” Chikuwa has emerged as the top goal scorer in the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, which concluded yesterday.
Chikuwa entered the final match of the season against Yadah FC with 16 goals and further solidified his lead by scoring once more, bringing his season total to 17 goals. This effort outpaced Khama Billiat, who finished with 13 goals.
Highlanders head coach Kelvin Kaindu expressed his pride following the match, praising the team effort that helped Chikuwa achieve the top scorer award.
“I’m thrilled to have produced the top goal scorer of the season. We are celebrating this achievement, and it’s a testament to the team’s efforts. Our strikers, in particular, played a significant role in helping him reach this milestone. Even when they were in a position to score, they chose to pass the ball to him,” said Kaindu.
He also acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in defense. “While we’ve made progress in attack and goal scoring, our biggest challenge was defending. We conceded too many goals that could have been avoided,” he added.
In other notable performances, Chicken Inn goalkeeper Donovan Bernard set a remarkable record with 20 clean sheets. Meanwhile, Greenfuel concluded their 2024 season unbeaten at their home ground, the Greenfuel Arena.
The Southern Region saw a reduction in its representation in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, with Arenel Movers, Bulawayo Chiefs, and Hwange relegated to the lower division.
