Zimbabwe is on high alert as cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) continue to rise in Asia.

The Ministry of Health and Childcare has issued an alert to all border posts and airports in Zimbabwe to intensify screenings and tests for the virus. This follows reports of over 1,500 children under the age of 14 testing positive for HMPV in China between December 2024 and January 2025.

HMPV, which shares similarities with Covid-19, affects the respiratory system and causes symptoms such as fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, and cold-like symptoms. While there is no specific cure for HMPV, it can be managed with proper treatment and monitoring.

On 7 January 2025, India reported 7 cases of HMPV, including two infections in Nagpur, two in Bengaluru, and one each in Chennai and Salem. Among those infected were a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy.

Zimbabwe is expecting an influx of travelers from China as the Chinese New Year approaches. Authorities are urged to remain cautious to prevent the spread of the virus and ensure that those infected are not allowed into the country.
