The Bulawayo Athletics Board has begun its 2025 season preparations, holding a cross-country competition at Mpopoma Park on the 11th of January 2025, with another competition scheduled for 26 January 2025, as part of the lead-up to the Interprovincial Cross-Country event in Harare on February 22, 2025.
To further prepare, the Board will host a refresher course for coaches and technical officials on January 25, 2025, at White City Stadium. The workshop will cover essential topics such as talent identification, team management, and warm-up techniques. The registration fee is $15, with teachers encouraged to attend to enhance their athletic knowledge.
In an interview, Watson Madanyika, Chairperson of the Bulawayo Athletics Board, urged young athletes to stay focused and avoid substance abuse, stressing its detrimental impact on their careers.
“I’m encouraging our boys and girls to work hard and listen to their coaches and to do away with drugs , so that they can perform better and stand chances of being selected to national team, like the youth games to be held in Namibia in May,
“If our athletes perform better , they will also stand a chance of securing scholarship abroad. Last year in 2024 , we had four girls and two boys , junior athletes that managed to secure scholarship in America,” said Madanyika
“As board we are working very hard in trying to make sure that at least we have one track and field competition per month if resources permits, but we willl soldier on so that we have our athletes qualifying for the international competition,” he added.
The season will also feature the Junior Championships in April and the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe Interprovincial Track and Field Championship on July 7, 2025.
