The water levels in Bulawayo’s dams have shown a notable increase due to the ongoing rainfall, with the city’s operational dams now at 37.31% capacity. According to the latest dam statistics, some dams have seen substantial improvements.
The Mtshabezi Dam, which has the highest water level, is at 64.26% capacity, followed by the Insiza Mayfair Dam at 42.28%. The Umzingwane Dam, which had only 4.64% capacity last year, has now risen to 36.89%. Other dams, including Inyankuni and Lower Ncema, have also seen increases, with water levels rising to 19.27% and 14.74% capacity, respectively.
In an interview with Skyz Metro FM, Bulawayo City Council Corporate Communications Officer Nesisa Mpofu explained that while the city itself experiences heavy rainfall, the areas where the dams are located receive significantly less rain, which can impact the water levels.
“If you compare the rainfall within the city to the rainfall outside the city, you will notice a significant difference. The city experiences heavier rains. However, most of Bulawayo’s dams are located outside the city. This explains why we haven’t seen a substantial improvement in our dam water levels,” she said.
The Bulawayo City Council has credited the rainfall recorded since 4 November 2024 for the improvement in dam levels and urged residents to continue conserving water to maintain a stable water supply.
