The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a nationwide operation to arrest touts and rank marshals who are disrupting the movement of public transport.

In a statement, ZRP Commissioner General Paul Nyathi stated that these individuals are causing traffic congestion and endangering the lives of commuters by picking up passengers in the middle of the road, often in collaboration with Mushikashika operators.

Nyathi emphasized that many touts are intoxicated, leading to harassment of drivers and passengers, and in some cases, theft and violence. Rank marshals are also accused of threatening drivers and passengers, creating a climate of fear.

The ZRP has a zero-tolerance policy for those who cause congestion in the Central Business District (CBD) by making undesignated pickups and promoting the commute of Mushikashika. Nyathi stressed that the reputation of the public transport system will not be tarnished by those who refuse to obey the law.

The police are urging the public to report any incidents of misconduct, harassment, or criminal behavior involving touts and rank marshals. In recent months, the ZRP has arrested 677 touts and 1,570 Mushikashika operators in a crackdown on illegal activities.
