The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has ramped up anti-smuggling operations to protect the economy, industry, manufacturers, and retailers, while preventing revenue loss and ensuring fair market competition.
During a tour of the ZIMRA State Warehouse at Trabablas Interchange (Mbudzi), Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Prof. Mthuli Ncube, emphasized the urgency of tackling smuggling, stating that it deprives the government of essential revenue and threatens local industries.
“Consider the scale of the prejudice,” Professor Ncube said. “First, there is the impact on government revenue. Then, some of these goods will displace locally produced items, impacting production in our factories and ultimately affecting jobs.”
ZIMRA has made notable progress, with recent operations leading to major seizures of smuggled goods, which not only undermine local products but also pose health risks due to questionable quality.
