As the Castle Lager Premier League kicks off this weekend, Highlanders head coach Kelvin Kaindu is eager to capitalize on the early fixtures to boost his team’s standing.
Highlanders will begin their campaign on Sunday with an away match against newly-promoted MWOS FC. Their first five fixtures feature four debutants—Kwekwe United, Scotland FC, Triangle United, and MWOS FC—alongside Green Fuel, a team that failed to secure a win against them last season.
Addressing the media today, Kaindu emphasized the importance of taking advantage of these early games while the squad remains fit, noting that injuries were a major setback in their previous campaign.
“We are ready to go and start the 2025 season,” said Kaindu. “We want to focus especially on the early games, that will probably help us see where we can be. We want to take advantage of the first games and probably gain much more fitness in terms of preparing for the rest of the season.”
The team has seen key departures, including senior players Peter Mudhuwa and last season’s Golden Boot winner Lynoth Chikuwa. However, Kaindu is confident in the young talent brought in as replacements.
“We lost a few of our influential players and we’ve replaced them with a younger generation,” he said. “We just hope that the new players will gel quickly. I think there are players that we feel and hope have got a future, and we hope to do better than what we did last season.”
Meanwhile, Harare giants Dynamos will kick off their season against ZPC Kariba on Sunday, while defending champions Simba Bhora take on former titleholders FC Platinum in their season opener tomorrow.
