Govt Extends Condolences, Steps Up Disaster Response After Rain-Induced Tragedies

The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has expressed its deepest condolences to those affected by the devastating rain-induced disasters that have swept across Zimbabwe.

In a statement released by Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, the government acknowledged the damage to critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, as well as the tragic loss of life due to flooding, lightning, and mine collapses.

With forecasts predicting continued rainfall, the ministry has announced a coordinated effort to mitigate further damage and protect vulnerable populations. The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works will collaborate with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), and the Zimbabwe Sub Aqua Unit (ZSAU) to provide assistance to high-risk areas and conduct public awareness campaigns on disaster safety.

Minister Garwe urged residents in low-lying areas to adhere to cautionary warnings and evacuate to safe shelters on higher ground. Artisanal miners were strongly advised to suspend all mining activities until the end of the rainy season to prevent further mine collapses and fatalities.

Tragically, over 200 lives have been lost since the heavy rains began in January. In Bulawayo alone, four people were swept away by flash floods in 2025.
