The Zimbabwe Prison Correctional Service (ZPCS) Anju Farm Prison in Nyamandlovu has received high praise for its commendable efforts in both bolstering food security within the country’s prison system and pioneering innovative rehabilitation programs.
The recognition came yesterday during a visit to the farm’s Irrigation Centre Pivot by ZPCS Commissioner Dr. Moses Chihobvu and the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (Arda) board chairperson, Mr. Ivan Craig.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the visit, ZPCS Commissioner Dr. Moses Chihobvu expressed his appreciation for the work being done at the farm prison, emphasizing its crucial role in promoting rehabilitation among inmates.
He also highlighted the strategic importance of expanding agricultural activities, including the drilling of more boreholes, to increase food production for prison consumption and generate income for the correctional service.
“The efforts at Anju Farm are truly commendable,” stated Commissioner Dr. Chihobvu. “This initiative demonstrates our commitment to moving beyond mere punishment and actively investing in the rehabilitation and reintegration of those in our care. Expanding our agricultural capacity here, including the development of more water sources, is strategically vital for both food self-sufficiency and generating much-needed income.”
Echoing the positive sentiments, Arda board chairperson Mr Craig applauded the Anju Farm Prison initiative, emphasizing the tangible impact of the initiative on national food security within the prison system.
He acknowledged the farm’s huge role in ensuring a consistent and reliable food source for inmates across the country.
The visit highlighted ZPCS’s commitment to transforming its approach from punishment to rehabilitation and reintegration, with agricultural projects like those at Anju Farm playing a vital role in achieving these goals.
