Zimbabwe and Mozambique have strengthened their bilateral ties by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to boost cooperation in the energy sector.
The MOU was signed on Thursday by Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Honourable July Moyo, and Mozambique’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Mr Estavao Pale. It covers electricity, petroleum investment, renewable energy, and infrastructure development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Honourable Moyo said, “Zimbabwe and Mozambique have collaborated in many areas. It is important that we now deepen this cooperation in electricity and petroleum. This MOU facilitates joint infrastructure developments, one of which is already underway — the upgrading of the Beira–Feruka corridor.”
The agreement is expected to promote trade in the energy value chains, including the use of petroleum infrastructure and investment in gas and energy efficiency.
“We aim to ensure that our utilities are well-coordinated and strengthened. Zimbabwe imports a significant amount of electricity from Mozambique, and this agreement allows us to expand our partnership in connectivity and infrastructure,” added Moyo.
Electricity is currently Zimbabwe’s top import from Mozambique, and this agreement sets the tone for deeper collaboration in the power sector to meet growing national demand.
Mozambique’s Minister Estavao Pale described the MOU as a milestone in strengthening regional energy security and economic cooperation.
