The Government of Zimbabwe has partnered with the Government of Japan and United Nations agencies to launch five major projects aimed at improving child and maternal health, tackling malnutrition, managing medical waste, and enhancing food security.
Speaking at the launch, Ministry of Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary Dr Aspect Maunganidze said, “This support comes at a critical time when the country is recovering from the worst drought in decades. It complements our national efforts to strengthen healthcare and build community resilience.”
The initiatives, supported under Japan’s 2024 Supplementary Budget and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), are being implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Food Programme (WFP), and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). Over 86,000 people will directly benefit, with hundreds of thousands more reached through digital tools.
Japan’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Shinichi Yamanaka, said:
“Japan is committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s development priorities, particularly in health, innovation and climate resilience.”
United Nations Development Programme Zimbabwe Resident Representative Ayodele Odusola added, “These projects are people-centred and reflect our joint commitment to leave no one behind.”
The Government of Zimbabwe says these partnerships are key to achieving Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
