Police in Bulawayo have confirmed the names of two men who died after being hit by a commuter omnibus at 6th Avenue and Lobengula street on Wednesday night.

The victims are Christopher Mukuwapasi and Lizwe Ncube, both men in their late 30s. The kombi driver has been identified as 28 year old Simbarashe Chokumanyara from Emakhandeni suburb.

According to Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the driver was travelling west along Sixth Avenue with 18 passengers in the kombi when he lost control of the vehicle.

The kombi swerved off the road and hit 14 people who were standing or walking near OK Godini.

Mukuwapasi and Ncube died at the scene. Their bodies were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem examinations. Twelve other people were injured and were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.

Police said the accident was caused by speeding and the driver’s failure to keep a proper lookout. The driver has since been charged with culpable homicide.

Inspector Msebele urged all drivers to be careful on the roads, especially in areas with many pedestrians.
