Zimbabwe has stepped up efforts to train citizens in artificial intelligence as part of plans to modernise systems and boost competitiveness in the digital economy.

A senior government official made the call at the 2026 Digital Economy Conference, saying AI skills are now critical for national development.

The country has produced about 5,000 AI graduates since 2024 through a national training programme targeting the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The initiative has since been expanded to Chinhoyi University of Technology to scale up capacity.

Officials say the programme is designed to reduce reliance on outdated systems and prepare both the public and private sectors for rapid technological change.

The push is part of wider government efforts to digitise public services, modernise legacy systems and improve productivity across the economy.
