Former Zimbabwe Republic Police detective Jaison Muvevi has been sentenced to four life terms plus 40 years in prison by the High Court after being convicted of murdering four people in Wedza and Harare.

The court dismissed Muvevi’s insanity defence, ruling that the killings were premeditated. In sentencing, the judge cited the use of a firearm, the seriousness of the offences, and lack of remorse as aggravating factors.

Muvevi was convicted on four counts of murder and attempted murder involving four other victims. Prosecutors argued that his position as a police officer amounted to a serious breach of public trust.

The sentences will run partly concurrently, resulting in four life sentences and an additional 40 years imprisonment.
