FIFA will consider a proposal to expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup from 48 to 64 teams, with the organisation’s committees expected to review the plan after the current tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino says a larger tournament could give more nations the opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage, following what FIFA says has been a successful introduction of the 48-team format.

The 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with opening matches also scheduled to take place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark the tournament’s centenary.

If approved, the expansion to 64 teams could allow the three South American nations to host full group-stage matches instead of a single opening fixture each.
