A primary school teacher in Hwange is currently under police investigation for allegedly biting 23 of his Grade 7 students as a form of punishment.
The incident reportedly took place at Neluswi Primary School in Jambezi on the 3rd of October.
49-year-old Oscar Ndlovu, who teaches at the rural school, allegedly bit his students after they failed to define the word “dynamic” during a lesson.
The incident came to light when a 12-year-old female student reported the assault to authorities, prompting the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to initiate an investigation.
Matabeleland North Police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, confirmed the allegations. According to the report, Ndlovu allegedly bit the young student on her right shoulder before biting 22 other students in the class.
“I can confirm that on October 23, 2024, at 1200 hours, the complainant made a report of assault to ZRP Jambezi, stating that she had been bitten by her schoolteacher,” Inspector Banda said.
“The incident reportedly took place on October 3, 2024, at around 1300 hours, when the teacher asked the class the meaning of the word ‘dynamic.’ When the students failed to explain the meaning, the teacher reportedly became furious and resorted to biting them as punishment.”
Inspector Banda added that law enforcement is making efforts to locate other victims and record their statements.
Ndlovu has yet to be arrested, and the complainant has been referred to Victoria Falls Hospital for a medical examination.
