President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has called for the urgent repatriation of the remains of Zimbabwean heroes who were captured and killed in Britain during the liberation struggle.

His remarks were made during the burial of national hero Cde Jaison William Chirinda at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, where he highlighted the importance of bringing these heroes home for proper burial.

During the ceremony, President Mnangagwa asserted that the spirits of these fallen heroes will remain restless until their remains are returned to Zimbabwe.

“We remind the British government and people that the spirit of our people will not rest until their remains are repatriated and returned in a dignified way back home here in Zimbabwe. Going forward, we urge the British government to return the remains of our people back to their land Zimbabwe.” Said President Mangwana

The President specifically mentioned several figures from Zimbabwe’s history, including Chief Chiwashira, Chief Shingaira, Chief Mapondeta, and Chief Mashayamombe, who were captured and killed in Britain.

He expressed deep sorrow over the fact that their remains are still held in British museums as trophies.

“The remains of our brave are still held in British museums as trophies after they were captured and killed under horrific circumstances.”

These remains, regarded as colonial artifacts, symbolize the painful history of Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence. President Mnangagwa emphasized the need for the British government to release these remains, allowing the heroes to receive the dignified burial they deserve on their native soil.

The call for repatriation reflects ongoing discussions around the restitution of cultural heritage and the recognition of historical injustices. The President’s remarks resonate with many Zimbabweans who seek acknowledgment and respect for their national heroes.
