The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Bulawayo are urging drivers to exercise heightened caution as the rainy season begins, following the recording of 102 accidents in the city from 6 to 12 November 2024.

With the onset of rain, road conditions have become more hazardous, with wet surfaces and potholes increasing the likelihood of accidents. The police are advising all drivers to slow down and avoid speeding, as these factors elevate the risk of road incidents.

ZRP Bulawayo Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, emphasized the importance of being extra cautious during this period and cautioned against reckless driving, particularly among some Honda Fit taxi drivers who have been reported to dangerously overtake by switching lanes.

“The rains have started and the rain causes many things; the rain causes potholes on our roads. Be patient, be patient when driving, do not over-speed, it is difficult to control brakes on wet roads,” Msebele said.

She further urged drivers to exercise patience, especially when dealing with drivers who seem to be acting recklessly on the road.

“Let’s try by all possible means to avoid unnecessary accidents, let’s try to avoid unnecessary loss of lives. Let’s try to drive carefully even if there is another car in front of you being driven by someone who seems like he or she doesn’t know what they are doing on the road. Be patient, the person will drive away, and you will continue. It is not good to lose lives, let’s preserve what we have,” she added.

The police have also reported two fatalities from the 102 accidents in the past week, underscoring the need for increased caution on the roads.
