Water levels in the dams supplying Bulawayo have dropped to alarming lows, with outflows exceeding inflows, putting the city at risk of a water supply crisis.
According to a Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) update released on Tuesday, the water crisis in Bulawayo and the greater Matabeleland region is worsening. Dam levels remain critically low, further straining the city’s water supply.
Upper Insiza Dam is at 1.4% capacity, Lower Ncema at 5.9%, and Mzingwane Dam at 2.0%. Upper Ncema Dam has dropped to an alarming 0.8%, while Inyankuni Dam stands at 10.3%.
Meanwhile, other dams in the region are faring slightly better: Silalabuhwa Dam is at 28%, Bubi-Lupane Dam at 38.4%, and Mtshabezi Dam at 49.0%.
ZINWA has emphasized the urgent need for water conservation measures and exploration of alternative sources to address the ongoing crisis.
