The Institute of Cultural Diplomacy (ICD) in Africa has stepped in to mediate the ongoing political crisis in Mozambique, which has been marred by violence and human rights abuses since the October 9, 2024, general election.

The election, which saw ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo secure 71% of the vote, was followed by allegations of widespread election rigging and protests by opposition supporters.

The situation escalated further when the constitutional court declared Chapo the winner with 65% of the vote, sparking further protests and leading to a severe crackdown by security forces. The subsequent unrest has led to a tragic loss of life, with over 300 individuals losing their lives in the ensuing violence.

In an interview with SkyzMetro FM, ICD Secretary General Pardon Tapfumaneyi emphasized the need for African unity in resolving the Mozambican crisis, citing the potential threat of regional instability.

“The political crisis in Mozambique is a serious threat to regional stability,” Tapfumaneyi warned. “Drought, crime, and the displacement of thousands, including women and children, are escalating. This situation has the potential to spill over into neighboring countries, creating a major humanitarian and security crisis.”

Tapfumaneyi emphasized the urgent need for dialogue and a peaceful resolution. “Therefore, to avert a full-blown regional crisis, leaders in Mozambique and the SADC region must engage in constructive dialogue and find a peaceful resolution to this conflict, ” he stressed.

The ICD’s intervention follows a formal request from Mozambican’s opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who wrote to ICD President Walter Mzembi seeking assistance in resolving the political impasse.

ICD delegates are expected to arrive in Mozambique in the coming days to commence their mediation efforts.
