In a move to protect parents’ rights, the Consumer Protection Commission has warned schools against compelling parents to purchase school uniforms exclusively from their outlets.

Addressing the issue, Mr. Kudakwashe Mudereri, Public Relations and Research Manager of the Commission, said this practice is illegal and deprives parents of their right to choose.

“We received complaints of schools who are forcing parents to buy school uniforms from the schools, it’s illegal, parents should be given , according to the law, an option to purchase from their suppliers, to make matters worse, they are actually charging very exorbitant prices unlike the ones obtaining, right now our inspectors are on the ground investigating ” said Mudereri

The Commission disclosed that 30 complaints have already been lodged against schools violating this law. Investigations into these cases are ongoing, and the Commission promised to release a complete list of schools facing prosecution in the coming weeks.

The regulatory body emphasized that parents are entitled to purchase school uniforms from any supplier of their choice, provided the items meet the general standards outlined by the schools. Institutions are therefore urged to refrain from restricting parents to specific outlets.
