Public service drivers, including commuter omnibus operators, must now be at least 30 years old and have a minimum of five years of driving experience under new regulations announced by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development. The stricter requirements, effective immediately, are part of amendments to road traffic regulations under Statutory Instrument 119 of 2023.
Drivers aged between 25 and 30 who were already licensed under previous rules will be allowed to continue operating. The changes aim to reduce road accidents linked to inexperienced drivers and align with global best practices that prioritize maturity and experience in public passenger transport.
The government has emphasized that passenger safety remains a top priority, ensuring that only skilled and capable drivers are entrusted with public transport vehicles.
