Farmers in Matebeleland region have been urged to adopt split top dressing fertilizer application to optimize crop yields and minimize nutrient losses during the region’s above-average rainfall season.
In an interview, Agronomist Ngonidzaishe Mativenga stated that split top dressing allows farmers to match fertilizer availability with crop demand, reducing waste as they apply fertilizer at different growth stages of the plant. This approach promotes healthy plant growth and increases crop yields.
“Apply fertilizer when the soil is moist, to prevent it from drying out the crop. And when applying, don’t do it all at once. If there’s heavy rain, you may lose essential nutrients. Instead, use split application when top dressing, apply fertilizer at different stages of plant growth. This will help you achieve a good harvest,” said Mativenga.
To achieve optimal results, farmers are encouraged to consider soil type, soil moisture, crop needs, and weather conditions when applying fertilizers. By adopting split top dressing, farmers can minimize losses, reduce environmental pollution, and contribute to the country’s food security.
