Namibia is mourning the loss of its founding President,Sam Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95 on Sartuday 8 February evening in Windhoek Namibia.
President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba announced his death, describing it as a great loss that has shaken the nation’s foundation.Former first President Nujoma was a key figure in Namibia’s fight for independence, founding SWAPO in 1960 and leading the armed struggle against apartheid South Africa from 1966.
As Namibia’s first president,serving from 1990 to 2005,Nujoma played a crucial role in building one of the region’s most stable economies.He was also president of SWAPO from its founding until 2007.Nujoma was a champion of women’s rights,working to change traditional patriarchal practices and was committed to preserving stability to ensure development efforts were supported by international donors.
Nujoma’s legacy is marked by numerous international honors, including the Lenin Peace Prize, the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize, and the Ho Chi Minh Peace Prize. In 2005, the Namibian parliament granted him the official status of “Founding Father of Namibia” in recognition of his achievements.
