As the world marked World Wildlife Day 2025, Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, underscored the urgent need for increased investment in nature to safeguard ecosystems and biodiversity.
This year’s theme, Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet, highlights the critical role of innovative financial strategies in conservation efforts. Dr. Mumba emphasized that wetlands are among the most valuable yet threatened ecosystems, playing a key role in flood mitigation, water purification, and sustaining biodiversity.
She noted that wetlands support 80% of amphibians and 75% of bird species, making their protection crucial for both nature and people.
“Innovative financial mechanism and nature based solutions are paving the way for transformative opportunities in wildlife conservation. These initiatives not only safeguard habitats but also empower local communities and align economic systems with environmental priorities. For instance, wetlands provide food, water and livelihoods to billions of people worldwide,” Dr Mumba said.
“By investing in their protection we are ultimately protecting ourselves. World Wildlife Day 2025 is a celebration of action and collaboration, it is a call to governments, businesses and individuals alike to invest in a resilient future for all life on earth,” she added.
Nature-based solutions and sustainable funding models are key to reversing biodiversity loss and strengthening climate resilience.
