Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, has revealed that Zimbabwe has been investing in family planning commodities over the past 11 years as a strategy to reduce maternal-related deaths in the country.
Speaking at the 58th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), currently underway, Dr. Mombeshora said the ministry, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has introduced innovative self-care methods to enhance access to reproductive health services.
“Our government has made a huge financial commitment to family planning commodities over the past eleven years,” Dr. Mombeshora stated. “This investment is a crucial component of our strategy to reduce maternal-related deaths and improve the overall health of women and children.”
Dr. Mombeshora noted that this financial commitment has significantly reduced maternal mortality rates—from 651,000 deaths in 2012 to 362,000 in 2022.
“The reduction in maternal mortality rates is a testament to the effectiveness of our strategies and the dedication of our healthcare professionals,” he added.
The CPD session is running from April 7 to 11 under the theme “Ensuring Healthy Lives and Promoting Well-being for All at All Ages.” It provides a platform for health experts to exchange knowledge and experiences aimed at improving global healthcare services.
