The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has confirmed the structure and start date of the new Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, a nationwide knockout tournament aimed at integrating clubs from grassroots to top-flight football.

ZIFA says the competition will begin this coming weekend, with opening matches involving Division one and lower-tier teams. The first-round draw is scheduled for Wednesday and the tournament will follow a single-leg knockout format throughout.

A total of 28 teams from outside the top flight, including 16 Division One sides, 10 provincial champions and two Area Zone representatives, will compete in early rounds. The 14 winners will then join 18 Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League clubs in the Round of 32.

The winner of the competition will qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

ZIFA says the tournament, modelled on a traditional FA Cup format, will also be replicated in the women’s game.
